How I Faced a Tough Week Without Alcohol: Overcoming Anxiety and Embracing Sobriety
Nov 20, 2024Life has a way of throwing us curveballs, doesn’t it? Last week was one of those weeks for me—a big reminder that health truly is the foundation of everything.
If you’re a midlife woman dealing with grey area drinking, anxiety, or even the aches and pains that come with this stage of life, I hope my story gives you inspiration.
The Curveball: Anxiety, Aches, and a Health Scare
It started with lower back pain and aching heels and arches in my feet. I hadn’t been doing much apart from light walking and spending time in my retail store, so the pain caught me off guard.
Then came the real shocker. During my routine self-breast exam, I noticed a lump in my left breast. Immediately, panic set in. I booked an appointment with my GP, who confirmed there was something there and referred me for a mammogram and ultrasound.
Cue the weekend of waiting—a time filled with reflection, tinges of sadness, and a fair amount of anxiety.
How I Handled Anxiety Without Alcohol
In the past, I would have coped with this stress by pouring a glass—or several—of wine. I would have let panic and anxiety take over, leading to tears, regret, and the familiar fog of drinking too much.
But this time, I didn’t drink. Sobriety has taught me to face life’s challenges head-on, with clarity and strength.
Here’s what I did instead:
- Gentle walks: My dogs were my grounding companions. Walking in nature helped calm my nerves and clear my mind.
- Journaling: Writing down my fears and hopes helped me process my emotions.
- Netflix and family time: Cozy evenings with my family brought me comfort.
- Self-care: I allowed myself to cry when I needed to and gave myself permission to feel everything.
Most importantly, I started planning. I reflected on what I would do if the results weren’t great. Instead of numbing the fear with alcohol, I empowered myself to face whatever was coming.
The Relief of Sobriety: A Clear Mind and a Healthy Body
Monday finally came, and with it, the news: my tests were clear. My back pain and aching feet started to ease, and I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and gratitude.
Here’s what made it even more powerful: I experienced every bit of that relief fully. There was no alcohol fog dulling my joy.
In my pre-sober days, I would have let fear drive me to overdrink, which only would have made the anxiety worse. But now, I lean on tools like mindfulness, journaling, and healthy routines. Sobriety has been truly transformative, allowing me to handle life’s curveballs with strength and grace.
Midlife Sobriety: Why It’s Never Too Late to Reinvent Yourself
This experience reminded me of something I always tell my clients: you’re never too old to change.
Midlife comes with its share of challenges—physical aches, emotional stress, and even health scares. But drinking to cope only postpones the work and robs you of the peace you deserve.
When you embrace sobriety, you open the door to clarity, resilience, and the ability to face life’s ups and downs with confidence.
How You Can Thrive Without Alcohol
If you’ve ever felt like you need a drink to handle stress or anxiety, know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Sobriety isn’t about restriction—it’s about freedom.
By learning to lean into discomfort and embracing healthy tools, you can break free from grey area drinking and rediscover your true self.
I’d love to help you on this journey. My coaching programs are designed for midlife women who want to transform their relationship with alcohol and reclaim their joy.
